Kindly review this article to stay aware of the potential risks of Interlock a new strain of Ransomware.
Interlock is a ransomware cybercriminals are using to encrypt files on Windows PCs. Afflicted systems will have their files encrypted and an ".interlock" extension will be appended to the end of them. For example, an Excel file name data.xlsx will appear as data.xlsx.interlock, signaling the system has been infected by the ransomware. In addition, an extortion note will be left on the infected system demanding payment in exchange for a decryption key to unlock the files and to stop the cybercriminals from posting them on the dark web.
How are systems being affected with Interlock:
- Unnecessary fake browser updates, from legitimate websites that have been compromised.
- ClickFix a social engineering tactic. This tactic involves tricking users with a fake CAPTCHA dialog error prompting them to enter a sequence of keys to "fix" the issue.
How we stay safe:
- Be aware of the methods cybercriminals are utilizing to infiltrate systems.
